About
What Vanro is
Vanro is a hiking and cycling route planner for the Slovak mountains. It computes routes from the waymarked hiking and cycling network and adds an elevation profile and points of interest.
Operator and contact
Vanro is an independent project under development. Send questions, bugs and suggestions to feedback@vanro.sk.
See also Terms of use and Safety and responsibility.
Privacy and data
Vanro works without an account too. Without signing in it stores no tracking cookies and sends no data to the server beyond the route computation itself. Settings and routes in progress stay only in your browser (localStorage):
vanro:theme: day/night mode.vanro-planner:draft:*: the route in progress (points, layers, settings).vanro:saved-routes:v1: routes you saved.vanro-planner:route-feedback:v1: feedback history (only if the widget is on).
Anonymous analytics
So we know which features people actually use, we measure traffic with anonymous, cookie-free analytics (Plausible, self-hosted on our server in the EU). We collect no personal data. No cookie, IP address or anything that could identify you or track you across sites is stored. That is why it needs no consent banner. We respect the browser Do Not Track signal: if you have it on, the analytics never loads.
Only aggregate counts are measured:
- page views (which parts of the app are used),
- route calculation, opening trip mode, publishing to the community,
- installing the app (PWA) and using it offline.
If you choose to create an account, a first-party sign-in cookie is added (httpOnly, session only, not for tracking) and your saved routes, photo diary and watched trips sync to our server so you have them on several devices. Passwords are stored only as a hash (argon2id), never in readable form.
Photos are stored on our server (Hetzner, EU) and EXIF metadata including GPS is stripped on upload. A route or trip is published to the community only when you choose to. Otherwise it stays private.
You can delete local data by clearing the site data in your browser. You can delete the account and all its server-side data (routes, photo diary, photos, watched trips, community posts) yourself in Profile › Account › Delete account. It is immediate and irreversible. If it fails, get in touch at feedback@vanro.sk.
You can download a copy of all your data in a machine-readable format (JSON) at any time via Profile › Account › Download my data.
Data sources and licences
Map data and waymarked routes
The map and waymarked hiking/cycling routes come from OpenStreetMap contributor data, available under the ODbL licence. Vector tiles are provided by OpenFreeMap. Hiking waymarks are based on data mapped according to the Slovak Hiking Club (KST) system.
Elevation data (relief and profile)
Hillshading and elevation profiles use the AWS Terrain Tiles elevation tiles (© Mapzen, AWS, SRTM/ETOPO1) and the Natural Earth base layer.
Thanks to all the communities and projects without which Vanro could not exist.
